1. Is the instructor trained to work with children? Yes! She has her masters degree in speech therapy and works at one of Atlanta's leading children's hospitals helping children of all ages!
2. How do I sign up for Play to Learn classes? You can register on-line by going to Register Now on the home page of this website, register through Firefly studio in Decatur, or call Play to Learn at (770) 547-1400. Pre-Registration is required for all Play to Learn classes.
3. What if I miss a class? Typically if you miss a class there is no make-up class or refund. If you inform Play to Learn of your anticipated absence in advance and other parents do the same a make up class on a different day or at a different time may be possible.
4. What should I wear? Comfortable play clothes for caregiver and child. We take our shoes off during class. Socked feet or bare feet are fine.
5. What should I bring to class? Whatever you take for you and your child when you are away from home (cup with drink, extra diaper/underwear etc.). No special supplies are needed for Play to Learn classes.
6. I have more than one child. Can I still come to the Play to Learn class? Several caregivers have brought newborns that have slept during class and that's fine. However, if your other child is not in the toddler age range (approximately 18 months-3 years) and will require your attention during the class, then they should not attend. If both children are within the toddler age range they are both welcome to attend. Each child will require an $80 registration fee.
7. What age should my child be to attend Play to Learn classes? The recommended age is 18 months to 3 years, but slightly outside that age range will typically work fine.
8. What are the benefits of taking this class? Play to Learn classes offer an opportunity for your child to be around other children and for you to be around other caregivers. This helps develop early social skills for your toddler. Play to Learn also improves basic communication skills (sign language and word use) and maximizes learning during play. You'll learn techniques for stimulating your child's cognitive, emotional, and language development, but most of all......it's FUN!
9. What if my child cries? It's okay. All children cry. It's their most basic form of communication. You're welcome to step out of class with your child until he/she feels better. You will be next to your child throughout the class and this will insure that your child feels secure in the new situation.
10.What if my child won't sit still during class? That's okay. As toddlers, it's in their nature to explore the environment. It is recommended that the caregiver stay with the group (unless you feel your child is doing something unsafe) even if the child leaves the group. This typically results in the child independently coming back to join in the fun.
11. What if my child is unhappy throughout the entire class? Some children have a difficult time adjusting to new situations. Most children will eventually become comfortable after 2-3 sessions, especially if their caregiver is playing and having fun!
12. What's the format of the class? The first 30-40 minutes of class is circle time with parachute play, toys, and dancing. These activities introduce the children and caregivers to the ABC's (Attention, Basic sign language, Choices) of play. The last 15 minutes is free play with gross motor activities (tunnels, balls etc.). Free play lets the caregivers observe their child during play and encourage social interaction. The class typically lasts between 45 minutes and one hour.
13. How much is the class? A six week session is $108. Full payment is due on the first day of class. One free trial class is available upon request, but pre-registration is still required.
14. How big is the class?
The class has no more than 8 children. Each child has one caregiver present.
15. Where is the class taught?
